The Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM is a new super zoom lens. This Sigma 18-250 mm lens is equipped with the unique OS (Optical Stabilizer) technology.
The Sigma 18-250mm lens incorporates the original anti-shake compensation function, with a 13.8 times zoom ratio.
As opposed to having an anti-shake function in the camera body, this Sigma 18-250 mm lens Hybrid Optical Stabilizer provides not only an anti-shake function for the camera body, but also compensates for image shaking in the view finder as the Optical Stabilizer is built in to the lens. Incorporating four Special Low Dispersion glass elements and three aspherical lens elements provides excellent image quality throughout the entire zoom range.
This Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 D C OS HSM Lens lens has a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7 inches) at all focal lengths and a maximum magnification of 1: 3.4 reproduction ratio, making it ideal for close-up photography.
An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making it suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and the supplied petal-type hood. Incorporating super multi layer coating reduce the ghost in the backlight photography.
Sigma's Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM), which is driven by ultrasonic waves, is built in to ensure quiet autofocusing at relatively high speeds. Super multi-layer coatings on the lens elements reduce the incidence of flare and ghosting.
Extending approximately 100 mm from the camera body (without the lens cap attached), this Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM Lens protrudes a further 78mm when zoomed out to the 250 mm focal length. The design consists of three barrels, the innermost containing the optical elements, the middle one engraved with 'macro' reproduction ratios that range from 1:3.4 at full zoom extension to 1:12.8 at the 18mm focal length.
Build quality is above average for the price of this lens. The mounting plate is stainless steel and the polycarbonate cladding has a solid feel. The Lens zoom movement is smooth and positive and a lock is provided to prevent it from extending when the lens is carried pointing downwards.
The increase in zoom range has required a substantial revision of the optical formula compared to the older 18-200mm OS. There's the same number of elements (18) which are now arranged in 14 groups, but the number of Super-Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements has shot up from one to four, and three aspherical elements are also employed to minimize distortion. The minimum focus distance of 0.45m has been maintained, resulting in an improved maximum magnification of 0.29x. According to Sigma, the optical stabilization system now offers up to 4 stops benefit; it also detects when the camera is panning and automatically switches to operating in one axis only, which is useful for shooting moving subjects.
